How to keep your earrings tidy: Our rack and organization tips

In dit artikel
You open your jewelry box, and there it is again: a tangled mess of single earrings, one you can't find anywhere, and a pair that has become dull. Sound familiar? The way you store your earrings largely determines how long they will stay beautiful. In this guide, we share our favorite storage and organization tips, so you can quickly find your pair every morning and keep your jewelry sparkling for years.
Why poor storage ruins your earrings
Earrings are small, delicate objects. If they're stored loosely together, they'll rub against each other, causing small scratches on the finish. Danglers get tangled, clasps bend, and stones can come loose. In addition, moisture and air play a significant role: they cause metal to oxidize faster, making your earrings dull or discolored. Anyone who carelessly tosses their jewelry into a dish on the bathroom cabinet often notices a dull sheen after a few months. Proper storage is therefore not a minor detail, but the simplest way to keep your collection in top shape, especially for handmade jewelry with delicate details.
The basics: dry, dark, and separate
Three words sum it all up: dry, dark, and separate. Store your earrings in a place without humidity fluctuations, so rather in your bedroom than in the bathroom. Dark helps prevent discoloration, as light and heat accelerate oxidation. And most importantly: keep pairs separate. By giving each earring or pair its own spot, you prevent scratches and tangles with intertwined danglers. A simple compartmentalized box, a box with a soft lining, or small fabric bags per pair already work wonders. Optionally, add a small sachet of silica gel to absorb moisture, an inexpensive trick that makes a big difference.
Which rack or box suits you
The best storage solution is the one you actually use. If you mainly have danglers and statement earrings, like our Mae Perle, an open rack with bars or a perforated panel is ideal: you see everything at a glance and nothing gets tangled. If you mainly collect studs and smaller models like the Manou, a compartmentalized box or a box with an insert cushion is more practical. If you have a large collection, feel free to combine: a wall rack for your current favorites and a drawer with compartments for the rest. This keeps choosing quick and enjoyable in the morning.
How to prevent oxidation and discoloration
Discoloration is usually a result of moisture, perfume, and skin oils. A few habits make a world of difference. Only put on your earrings after your perfume and hairspray have dried, and wipe them briefly with a soft, dry cloth after wearing them before putting them away. Then store them in a closed box instead of in the open air. If a pair has lost some of its shine, careful cleaning helps; for that, read our tips on how to gently clean your earrings. Traveling and taking your earrings with you
When traveling, your jewelry will get messed up if you just throw it loosely into your toiletry bag. Use a compact jewelry case with compartments or, for studs, a simple trick: poke them through a button on a thin ribbon or through a piece of foam rubber so the pairs stay together. It's best to store danglers separately in small bags. This way, you'll arrive with your earrings neatly paired, ready to wear. A light, nickel-free travel selection of three to four pairs is usually sufficient for a weekend.
Good storage, longer wear
Ultimately, good storage is a form of care: you not only protect the shine but also the comfort and lifespan of your jewelry. At Petit Bonbon, we handcraft each earring in our studio, handmade in Dendermonde, and all of them are 100% nickel-free, lead, and cadmium-free. Precisely because so much craftsmanship goes into them, they deserve a permanent spot on a rack or in a box instead of a tangled mess in a dish. Do you want to expand your collection with light, comfortable models that can be worn every day, such as the timeless Whisper White? Then calmly discover our full collection and choose the pairs you'll wear most often.
