Which material is genuinely nickel-free? Materials under the microscope

Nikkelvrij materiaal voor gevoelige oren — Sofie Veil oorbellen van Petit Bonbon
In dit artikel

It's on almost every jewelry label these days: nickel-free, hypoallergenic, suitable for sensitive ears. But behind those words lies a world of difference. One 'nickel-free' pair leaves your ears alone, while another causes itching after just an hour. How can this be? In this guide, we explain which materials are truly safe for sensitive ears, what to look out for, and why the core of an earring is often more important than its exterior.

Why nickel causes so many problems

Nickel is the most common contact allergen in the world. A large proportion of people with sensitive ears react to it sooner or later, resulting in red, itchy, or weeping earlobes. The frustrating thing is that nickel is present in many cheap alloys, often hidden under a layer of plating or color. As soon as that layer wears off or your piercing releases some moisture, the nickel is released and irritation begins. If you want to know how to prevent such inflammations, read our guide on preventing inflamed earlobes. The only real solution is to choose materials that naturally release little to no nickel.

Titanium and surgical steel

Titanium is one of the safest choices available. It's light, strong, and releases virtually no nickel, making it ideal for people with a pronounced allergy or for fresh piercings. Surgical steel is a popular and affordable option that is well-tolerated in most cases. A caveat, however: not all 'steel' is equal. The quality varies greatly by manufacturer, and cheap variants can still contain traces of nickel. Therefore, buy from a brand that clearly communicates about its materials, so you can be sure of what you're putting on your ears.

Sterling silver 925 and real gold

Sterling silver 925 consists of 92.5 percent pure silver, supplemented with other metals for strength, usually copper. It is a noble and skin-friendly choice, provided there is no nickel in the alloy. Real gold is safe from about 14 karats; the higher the karat content, the purer and milder it is for the skin. Our delicate Sofie Veil and the exquisite Ada Snow are examples of light, elegant designs made with these skin-friendly materials, ensuring comfortable wear all day long.

Plated: pay attention to the core

'Plated' itself says nothing about safety, as it only describes the outermost layer. The question is always: what's underneath? Plated sterling silver (vermeil) has a noble core and is generally safe. But plating over a cheap alloy can contain nickel that is released as soon as the top layer wears off. That's why a gold-colored earring is not automatically skin-friendly. A beautiful mother-of-pearl or opal design like the Naia Opal looks luxurious, but it's the materials underneath that determine whether your ears stay happy. So always ask about the composition of the entire earring, not just the color.

How Petit Bonbon approaches it

At Petit Bonbon, we leave nothing to chance. All our earrings are 100% nickel-free, lead and cadmium-free and handmade in Dendermonde. Because we work in our own studio and in small batches, we maintain control over every component, from the clasp to the smallest stone. This way, you can be sure that 'nickel-free' is not an empty promise from us. Want to know more about why this is so important for sensitive ears? Choose with peace of mind

Truly nickel-free means the entire earring is safe, not just the outer layer. Titanium, good surgical steel, sterling silver 925, and gold from 14 karats are your safest friends. Preferably choose a brand that is transparent about materials and, like Petit Bonbon, makes working nickel-free a fixed principle. This way, you can enjoy beautiful earrings carefree, day after day.
