How do you gently clean your earrings?

In dit artikel
It happens to everyone: a pair of earrings you wear daily starts to dull after a few weeks. A haze on the gold, a greenish edge around the silver hoops, a milky white spot on your pearls. Fortunately, you don't have to throw away your jewelry — with a few gentle actions, you can make them shine again, without scratches or damage. In this article, I share our workshop tips: per material, step by step, and always with respect for the fine finish.
Why earrings dull faster than you think
Every day, our skin secretes a mixture of sweat, sebum, and skin flakes. Add perfume, hair products, foundation, and sunscreen, and you understand why your earrings endure more than a ring or bracelet. With earrings, this layer collects precisely in the place you see least: behind the stopper and in the curve of the clasp. That's also where bacteria settle — and where discoloration begins. A quick weekly polish is therefore not a luxury, but the way to give your handmade in Dendermonde jewelry the same look for years to come.
The basic kit: what you always have at home
You don't need expensive supplies to safely clean your earrings. What we use ourselves in the workshop:
- A soft, clean microfiber cloth (not paper towels — they are too rough)
- Lukewarm water and a drop of mild, fragrance-free soap
- A soft baby toothbrush for fine corners
- A polishing cloth for precious metals (separate for gold and silver)
- A dry cotton cloth for drying
What you'd better NOT use: toothpaste, abrasive cleaners, bleach, or aggressive jewelry cleaners from the supermarket. Before you know it, you'll scratch off the top layer of gold plating, or dislodge the pearl from its setting.
Gold-plated and gold-colored: handle layers with care
Most of our light favorites like Kaia oat and Mae perle have a gold-plated or gold-plated brass base. That layer is thin, so anything abrasive is out of the question. Hold the earring under lukewarm running water, dip your fingertips in soapy water, and gently rub with circular motions. Rinse thoroughly (soap residue gives a dull result) and pat dry with your cotton cloth. Never use a precious metal cloth on plated items: that is meant to rub off a micro-layer — precisely what you want to avoid here.
Sterling silver 925: polishing cloth and airtight storage
Silver turns black due to oxidation — not because it's 'wrong', but because sulfur in the air reacts chemically with the metal. A silver polishing cloth removes that layer in seconds. Work in straight lines, not circular. For deep oxidation between chain links, lukewarm soapy water with a soft brush can help, followed by thorough drying. Store your silver earrings in a sealed bag or box between wears, preferably with an anti-tarnish strip. That way, the problem stays away.
Pearls, semi-precious stones, and resin: extra gentle
Pearls are living surfaces. No alcohol, no ultrasonic bath, no chemicals — just a damp (not wet) soft cloth after each day of wear. For Manou and similar soft designs, the same applies: lukewarm water, mild soap, avoid prolonged exposure. Resin and plastic elements quickly get fresh again with a microfiber cloth and a drop of water. In any case, avoid perfume, hairspray, and sunscreen on the jewelry: always apply your product FIRST, and only put on your earrings when the skin is dry.
Care that prevents inflammation
Clean earrings are not only more beautiful, they are also healthier for your earlobe. A dirty clasp or stopper is a direct cause of red, sensitive ears. Clean your clasp weekly, especially if you sleep or exercise with the same earrings. Change earrings regularly so your earlobe gets breathing room, and if in doubt, opt for 100% nickel-free models — all Petit Bonbon earrings are 100% nickel-free, lead- and cadmium-free and handmade in Dendermonde, precisely for comfortable daily wear. These small, regular habits will keep your jewelry beautiful longer and make your ear feel better. A few minutes a week — that's all it takes — and you'll enjoy the same sparkle for years as on day one.
