Little wound on your earlobe that won't heal? Here's why

In dit artikel
A persistent wound on your earlobe can really get you down. Every time it seems to be getting better, the next morning it’s bleeding, crusty, or weeping again. Frustrating. The good news: in nine out of ten cases, we find the cause in two places—the material and how you care for the piercing. Below, we'll show you how to break this cycle.
Why a wound lingers
A wound heals when it gets rest. If it doesn't, the body remains stuck in the initial inflammatory phase. Three scenarios are most common: (1) an allergic reaction to nickel or another base alloy that continuously irritates it; (2) constantly rotating the earring to prevent it from closing, thereby disrupting every micro-healing process; (3) sleeping position and pressure that reopens the wound at night. Often, these three work together.
Step 1: Immediately switch to a nickel-free pair
As long as you’re unsure about your material, the wound won't be able to heal peacefully. During the testing period, choose light, reliable earrings that are 100% nickel-free, lead-free, and cadmium-free. Ada Snow, Whisper White, and Kaia Oat are examples of handmade earrings that we personally test before adding them to our collection. Also, read our guide on nickel-free earrings for sensitive ears if you want to know more about what truly makes a product safe.
Step 2: Stop rotating
A myth that is still too common: constant rotation keeps the piercing open. This is not true for fresh piercings (the earring should actually remain still), and for a healing wound, it is downright harmful. Let the earring rest where it is, only touch it to disinfect, and do not switch it out in between.
Step 3: Gentle disinfection, no more and no less
Twice a day with a sterile saline solution (NaCl 0.9%) is enough. Skip aggressive agents (alcohol, antiseptic hand gels, iodine): these strip the skin, and the wound has to start from scratch again. Gently pat dry with a clean cotton swab and nothing more.
Step 4: Adjust your sleeping position
Do you often sleep on the affected side? Then you're pressing the wound flat against your pillow for hours. Try consistently sleeping on your back or the other side for a few nights, and choose a soft pillowcase made of cotton or silk. A week like this, and you’ll often see a difference.
Step 5: Give it time
A wound that has been lingering for weeks needs at least 3 weeks of quiet, healing care before you draw conclusions. Implement only one change per week (material, then sleep, then routine)—otherwise, you won't know afterwards what helped.
When to consult a doctor
Is there pus, do you feel a hard lump under the skin, or does the wound bleed persistently? Don't wait longer than a week and call your doctor. The same applies if the wound has lasted for months and you've truly tried everything—a short course of cortisone or a referral to a dermatologist might then bring the breakthrough.
