How is a new earring created in our studio? A look behind the scenes

In dit artikel
Have you ever wondered how much work goes into that one pair of earrings that just feels right? An earring that doesn't pull, doesn't itch, and has just the right amount of sparkle rarely happens by chance. At Petit Bonbon, every new design starts as an idea on paper and only makes it into the collection after weeks of testing. In this blog, we'll take you behind the scenes of our studio in Dendermonde, from the initial sketch to the moment an earring is ready to be worn.
It starts with a sketch
Every new earring begins with an idea. Sometimes it comes from a color we see somewhere, sometimes from a shape, a stone, or a customer's request for something that doesn't yet exist. We hand-sketch that initial inspiration. We play with proportions, with the length of a dangle, with the placement of a pearl. A lot gets discarded at this stage: not every beautiful idea can be translated into an earring that is comfortable and wearable. Only when a sketch continues to appeal to us and feels realistic does it move on to the next phase. This is how we ensure from the start that our handmade earrings are not only beautiful but also wearable.
From sketch to prototype
As soon as a sketch convinces us, we create a first prototype. This is the exciting moment when a drawing suddenly becomes something you can hold. We choose the materials, determine the finish, and assemble the first version. Almost always, something isn't quite right: the dangle hangs a little too low, the stone catches the light differently than expected, or the clasp doesn't feel smooth enough. Then we adjust, sometimes five or six times, until the proportions are perfect. A model like Mae perle owes its tranquility and balance to precisely that patient refinement. A prototype that remains too heavy or too clumsy simply doesn't make it to the finish line.
Wear testing: the fairest test
An earring can look beautiful on a table and still be disappointing once you wear it. That's why every prototype is worn in real life for a while before we release it. We pay attention to the weight, how the earring moves when you turn your head, and how it feels after a full day. Does it pull on your earlobe? Does it start to irritate after a few hours? These are things you only discover by wearing it, not by looking. Light, everyday favorites like Kaia oat prove how important this phase is: they still feel like nothing after hours. Only when a design passes that test with flying colors is it allowed into the collection.
Why nickel-free is not a detail
When it comes to material selection, we make no compromises. All Petit Bonbon earrings are 100% nickel-free, lead-free, and cadmium-free. That's not a marketing slogan, but a fundamental principle: nickel is the most common cause of irritated, itchy earlobes, and we want to keep our customers far away from that. By consciously choosing nickel-free materials, even people with sensitive ears can wear our earrings daily. If you want to know more about why that makes such a difference, you can read it in our article on nickel-free earrings for sensitive ears. After all, comfort doesn't start with the shape, but with what touches your skin.
Small batches, great care
We make our earrings in small batches, handmade in Dendermonde. This means that no pair anonymously rolls off an assembly line. Every earring passes through our hands, is checked, and finished with care. Small batches also have another advantage: they keep our collection personal and allow for signature details that you won't find in mass production. A playful model like Manou thus receives the attention it deserves. We further explain the difference between handmade and factory-made jewelry in this article.
From studio to your ears
A new earring doesn't come into being in a single day. It grows from sketch to prototype, is endlessly tested, and only released when it is both beautiful and comfortable. You can taste that care in every pair you wear. Do you want to feel what that patient craftsmanship is like? Then discover our complete collection of handmade, 100% nickel-free earrings, made to be worn with joy every day.
